An Inside Look at Far Cry 5

Ubisoft released a slew of news today regarding their critically acclaimed Far Cry series. Far Cry took off in popularity primarily with the release of Far Cry 3, a game that put you in a tropical environment with an extreme villain and a whole lot of chaos. From there, they created a small game set in a sci-fi 80's environment which leaned more towards humor and fun, and then they followed it up with Far Cry 4, a game slightly reminiscent of the formula used in the third iteration, with a new setting, a whole lot of vehicles, and an interesting villain (though no one can beat Vaas in my book).

Far Cry 5 looks to follow this formula, but they are trading out the interesting vacation destinations for a look in America's backyard, a town called Hope, Montana. Most games set in America take place in the large urban environments, but Montana is a state ripe for a Far Cry feel with varied terrain, extremely rural environments with sparse population existing far away from each other, tight knit families and communities, and a careful balance of wilderness and civilization. And in the center of that balance lies a man looking to topple it, a chaotic and charismatic cult leader named Joseph Seed.

Not only is this iteration of the series taking place in the United States, but it is also going to be the first Far Cry that will let you create your own character as well as the first to let you potentially have a female character. Your character plays the role of a Deputy Sheriff caught up in the turmoil happening in Hope. This will also be the first in the series to let you play the campaign entirely in two player coop with previous iterations having either a separate coop campaign or a very minor coop inclusion that allowed two players to take out outposts and complete some side missions and activities.

Far Cry 5 plans to make the most out of its environment with a slew of vehicles and animals as always, and as another awesome added bonus, stemming from what the series practiced in Far Cry Primal, you will have an animal companion, most notably a canine who can help attack NPC's as well as retrieve weapons. Ubisoft also revealed three additional characters in the series that will be aiding the protagonist in some way. There's the pilot and mechanic, Nick; the preacher, Jerome, who is tired of having his church and congregation be subject to violence by the growing cult; and the bartender and Molotov maker extraordinaire, Mary. Far Cry will also be bringing back the Map Maker, a powerful tool that existed in Far Cry 2 and Far Cry 3 making it easy to create and share custom multiplayer content That being said, you can expect the game will also have multiplayer variants aside from two player coop.

02/27/2018. It is cross platform, though it appears that Sony has gained some exclusivity regarding content with the game.
